All Eyes on Northwest Detection Center: On the Ground with La Resistencia

✊🏽 Thank You for Showing Up

On Saturday, May 31, dozens of us gathered to protest the inhumane conditions at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) in Tacoma, WA. We began with grounding words and direction from organizers with Migrante Bayan Portland, the International Migrant Alliance, and VOZ.

Together, we joined a caravan north to bear witness, build power, and uplift the voices of those detained.

📍 On the Ground with La Resistencia

In Tacoma, we connected with La Resistencia, the local group leading the fight to shut down NWDC. We heard firsthand stories that are as heartbreaking as they are urgent.

One story is that of Jose Luis, a Venezuelan laborer connected through VOZ, who has been locked inside NWDC for months. His experience reflects a broader pattern of cruelty:

  • 📵 Calls cut off when multiple people try to join a video call

  • 🍽️ Meals arriving as late as midnight

  • 🚫 No time outside for weeks—even months

  • 📈 Detention and deportations are increasing, even as GEO Group and ICE lack the staff to provide basic care

This is inhumane. And it’s happening on our watch.

🛑 What You Can Do — Take Action Now

  • ✔️ Sign petitions as part of the #FreeThemAll campaign

  • ✈️ End contracts with airlines like Avelo, which ICE uses to deport people

  • 📄 Say NO to a 30-year contract renewal for GEO Group and ICE

  • 📣 Keep showing up outside NWDC & call your reps:

  • Tell them to Free Them All and Shut It Down

💬 Why We Keep Showing Up

“People navigating their immigration case should be able to do so with their families and in community—not behind bars in immigration detention.”

Everyone deserves dignity, safety, and the support of their community—not incarceration.
