Thousands Rally Against ICE: Unions and Families Stand Together for Immigrant Justice

Between 8,000 and 10,000 people (including teachers, nurses, other union members, and families) gathered to demonstrate their discontent at the “Labor Against I.C.E. Rally and March”. With more than 30 unions participating, the rally and march made one message clear: solidarity is not a slogan, it’s consistent action. People showed up to organize, to advocate, and to stand alongside migrant communities with purpose and commitment.

During the event, IMIrJ staff member Benjamin addressed the crowd, emphasizing that dedication means taking action in the streets and standing with one another, every time. Speakers uplifted community defense efforts that protect our neighbors and strengthen collective power, including the Deportation Defense Coalition (DDC), which IMIrJ helped co-found.

Harsh reality

When marchers arrived near the ICE facility to show their discontent and rejection of current immigration operations in the city and the country, the response was alarming, disproportionate, and unnecessary. Agents used tear gas, and some people—including children—became sick. Even so, community members and families continued to emphasize the importance of speaking up for our neighbors, our city, and our country.

Afterwards, the group regathered at the park for more speakers and a closing message grounded in unity and commitment. We also want to recognize ILWU Local 5 union, of which IMIrJ is a part. The fight continues, and we need to stay united, supporting each other and our migrant neighbors as we build a city and country that welcomes everyone, and that we can be proud of.
